Catch free exercise activities such as aqua aerobics and yoga on the Cairns Esplanade.

Join the locals, hit the friendly paths with bikes or scooters, or check out the customised Cairns Skate Park.

Choose from beach volleyball courts, basketball courts and tennis courts.  Or take advantage of the open spaces and play a ball game, throw a frisbee, or fly a kite.

Other popular sporting activities away from the waterfront are walking and hiking, golf and mountain biking.

Barlow Park is home to football and athletics and hosts National Rugby League (NRL) games.

Cazalys Stadium hosts Australian Rules Football (AFL) and cricket, including popular Big Bash T20 cricket games.

One of the most-loved Cairns sports brands is the Cairns Taipans basketball team.

This team plays in the National Basketball League (NBL).  With home games played at Cairns Convention Centre.  Locally known as “the snake pit”, and are a great night out – be sure to wear bright orange!

Kuranda

This village in the rainforest provides a welcome break from the warmer coast.   Discover a segue to a wonderland of native animals and birdlife.

With markets offering a wide range of local products, indigenous street music performers add to the atmosphere.  Then visit the unique bird and butterfly sanctuaries.

Access is via road, the Kuranda Scenic Railway or Skyrail cable car.

Atherton Tableland

About 1 hour from Cairns, this plateau is a Garden of Eden whose arable lands yield exotic fruits and vegetables worldwide.

Atherton Tablelands has towns full of character and local and military history.  Check out the Chinese influence in Atherton, and don’t miss the vast waterways of Tinaroo Falls Dam and the Barron River.
