The Cairns Taipans are Cairns only National sporting team when there is a home game in Cairns the whole city comes alive – its a great night out if you’re looking to have some fun in Cairns and share the love of sport
Founded in 1999, the Taipans are Cairn’s official NBL basketball team. Interestingly, The Cairns Taipans are named after a specious of a venomous snake native to Australia. A member of the elapid family, taipans are known for their large size, their speed, and their agility.
The Taipans joined the NBL in the 1999/2000 season, coached by former Cairns Marlins ABA coach Rod Popp. The team got off to a rough start, finishing their first season with an abysmal 2-26 record. In spite of their rocky start, however, the Taipans have gone on to reap much success with four NBL Final appearances, one NBL Grand Final appearance, and two NBL Rookies of the year players.
If you are looking for an exciting way to pass a free evening in Cairns, you are well advised to head to one of the Taipans’ home games in the Cairns Convention Center, known colloquially as “the snake pit.” Be sure to wear white and orange!
